Search no longer ends with ten blue links. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT search and Perplexity read web pages, combine them into one answer and show a handful of sources. Generative engine optimization (GEO), also called answer engine optimization (AEO) or AI search optimization, is the work of making sure your business is one of those sources: accurately described, and for the questions that lead to revenue.
This playbook is for 2027 planning. It separates what the platforms and the research actually say from the myths sold around GEO. The facts come from official documentation and the original GEO paper; the outlook is our assessment and can change as products change. Research checked: 8 November 2026.
The short answer: GEO is SEO plus being worth citing
There is no secret AI ranking factor you can switch on. Google says the best practices for SEO remain relevant for AI Overviews and AI Mode and that no special optimisations are required. What GEO adds is a different goal: not only a position on a results page, but being selected, quoted and correctly described inside an answer. That rewards clear, verifiable, well-structured content from a recognisable source.
Where GEO comes from: what the research found
The term was formalised in the paper “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization” by researchers from Princeton University and IIT Delhi, first published in 2023 and presented at KDD 2024. They built GEO-bench, a benchmark of 10,000 queries, and tested how changes to a source page affected its visibility in answers generated from the top five search results.
- Adding citations to credible sources, relevant quotations and statistics produced the strongest gains; the best methods improved visibility by up to roughly 40% on the paper’s main metric.
- Keyword stuffing, a classic old-SEO tactic, offered little to no improvement and performed worse than the baseline in the Perplexity test.
- Making the text sound more authoritative or persuasive did not produce a significant improvement overall.
- Effects varied by domain, and lower-ranked sources gained more than the top result, which sometimes lost visibility.
Read these numbers carefully. The experiments used GPT-3.5 and a research setup, and the engines people use in 2027 run on other models and retrieval systems. The durable lesson is directional: evidence, clarity and attributable facts help; manipulation does not.
How each platform decides what it can use
GEO starts with access. If an AI search system cannot crawl or index your page, nothing else matters. Each platform documents its own controls:
- Google: a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to be a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, according to its guide to AI features. Google says you do not need AI text files or special schema.org markup, and AI training in some other Google systems is controlled separately through Google-Extended.
- OpenAI: the OAI-SearchBot crawler surfaces websites in ChatGPT search. Sites that block it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, while blocking GPTBot only signals that content should not be used to train foundation models.
- Perplexity: PerplexityBot surfaces and links websites in Perplexity search results and, according to Perplexity, is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models.
- Microsoft: Bing Webmaster Tools reports citations in Copilot and in AI-generated summaries in Bing, and Bing recommends IndexNow so participating search engines learn about new and updated pages quickly.
A common mistake is a firewall rule or CDN bot setting that silently blocks these crawlers. Before you rewrite any content, check robots.txt, security rules and server logs.
The 2027 GEO playbook: seven practical moves
1. Map the questions, not only the keywords
AI answers respond to longer, conversational prompts, and engines expand one question into several related searches. List the real questions buyers ask before they contact you: requirements, costs, timelines, risks, alternatives and comparisons. Each important commercial page should answer a defined set of them. Our guide to Google AI Mode and SEO in 2027 explains this query fan-out in more detail.
2. Put the answer first, then the evidence
Open each section with a direct answer of two or three sentences, followed by details, examples and limits. Microsoft’s Bing team recommends clear headings, tables and FAQ sections so that key information is easier for AI systems to reference accurately. This is also simply good writing for people.
3. Add facts that can be attributed to you
The GEO paper’s best-performing changes were citations, quotations and statistics. For a business, that means real numbers you can stand behind, named sources, worked examples, prices or price ranges, project timelines and honest trade-offs. Generic content can be paraphrased from anyone; first-hand evidence gives an engine a reason to cite you.
4. Make your business unambiguous
AI answers often describe a company in one sentence. Keep your name, services, locations and contact details consistent across your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, directories and social profiles. Google’s Organization structured data documentation explains how properties such as name, logo, address and sameAs help disambiguate your organisation. Structured data must match what is visible on the page.
5. Build topic clusters with internal links
Engines that fan out across subtopics can draw on several of your pages. A pillar page, supporting articles and clear internal links show depth on a subject. In our audits, weak structure is often the real blocker; see the top SEO problems we find on client websites.
6. Keep content fresh and dated
Prices, features and regulations change. Show when a page was last reviewed, update it when the facts change and remove outdated claims. Bing notes that accurate, up-to-date content matters for citation in AI answers and that IndexNow helps engines see changes faster.
7. Earn mentions beyond your own site
AI answers frequently combine several sources. Reviews, partner pages, industry publications, conference talks and expert quotes help confirm what you say about yourself. Treat digital PR and community presence as part of GEO, not as a separate branding exercise.
How to measure GEO in 2027
Measurement has improved. Since February 2026, Bing Webmaster Tools has offered an AI Performance report in public preview. It shows how often your pages are cited in Copilot, AI summaries in Bing and select partner experiences, plus the grounding queries behind those citations. In June 2026, Bing added Intents, Topics, Citation Share and Compare in preview. In Google Search Console, the generative AI performance report shows impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode; the clicks are counted in the standard Performance report.
A practical 2027 dashboard combines AI citations and impressions, organic clicks, branded search demand, referral traffic from AI assistants in analytics and, most importantly, qualified leads. Manual prompt tests are useful for spotting errors in how AI describes you, but answers vary by user and over time, so one screenshot is not a ranking report. Our Search Console, GA4 and Bing tracking checklist covers the setup.
GEO myths to ignore
- “You need an llms.txt or AI text file to appear.” Google says no new machine-readable files are required for its AI features.
- “Special schema guarantees AI citations.” No markup guarantees inclusion; it only helps machines understand content that is already visible on the page.
- “Add more keywords for the AI.” The original GEO research found that keyword stuffing did not help.
- “Hidden prompts can make AI recommend you.” Hidden instructions are manipulation, can break search spam policies and damage trust when they are discovered.
- “GEO replaces SEO.” Crawlability, indexing, links and helpful content remain the foundation.
A 90-day GEO plan
Days 1–20: audit access and set a baseline. Check crawler access for Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, verify Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, and export AI impressions, citations and leads.
Days 21–50: rewrite the ten to twenty pages that matter most commercially. Add direct answers, evidence, comparison tables, FAQs based on real questions, author or company expertise and internal links.
Days 51–90: strengthen your business information and off-site signals, keep pages updated and compare citations, impressions and qualified leads with the baseline. Then decide whether to scale content, PR or paid search next.
How Metanow helps with GEO
Metanow has worked on SEO, websites and performance marketing since 2022. We do not sell guaranteed placements in AI answers, because no agency controls them. We work on what can be controlled: technical access, content that answers real buying questions, clear business information, measurement in Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and analytics, and reporting tied to leads. If you are deciding who should do this work, compare an SEO agency with in-house SEO. For the step after answers, AI that takes action, read AI agents in business in 2027.
What remains uncertain for 2027?
Platforms change their models, interfaces and reports often, and AI answers can still be wrong. Advertising inside AI experiences and assistants that complete tasks could shift traffic again. Build for people first, document your sources and review your GEO plan every quarter.
Frequently asked questions
What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?
GEO is the practice of improving how often and how accurately your content is used and cited in AI-generated answers from tools such as Google AI Mode, Copilot, ChatGPT search and Perplexity. It builds on SEO fundamentals and adds a focus on clear answers, evidence and consistent business information.
Is GEO different from AEO or AI search optimization?
The terms overlap. Answer engine optimization (AEO) and AI search optimization usually describe the same goal: being the source an AI answer selects. In practice the work is the same: access, helpful content, evidence, structure and measurement.
Do I need an llms.txt file or special schema for GEO?
Not for Google. Google states that no new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema.org markup are needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Accurate structured data that matches the visible page is still useful.
How can I see whether AI tools cite my website?
Use the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools for citations in Copilot and Bing AI summaries, the generative AI report in Search Console for impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode, and analytics for referral traffic and leads. Add regular manual prompt checks.
How long does GEO take to show results?
There is no guaranteed timeline. Access fixes can take effect after recrawling, while improvements to content, business information and reputation usually take months. Measure against a baseline and review the results quarterly.
