A chat window on your website can mean two very different things. With live chat, a person from your team replies in real time. With an AI chatbot, a language model answers on its own, based on your help articles, product information or other approved content, and hands over to a person when it cannot help. In between sit scripted chatbots that guide visitors through fixed questions and buttons without any AI.
Most chat tools now offer all three, so the real question is not which tool, but how much you want to automate and where a person should take over. This comparison is based on the official pricing pages of Intercom and Tidio and on Odoo’s documentation for chatbots and AI live chat as of November 2026, plus what we see when we build conversational AI solutions for small and mid-sized businesses.
Short verdict
Choose live chat if your conversations are few, valuable and need judgement: consultative sales, complex products, existing customers with individual questions. People build trust, but only during your opening hours and only as fast as your team can reply. Choose an AI chatbot if many visitors ask the same questions, you want answers outside office hours and you have good, up-to-date content the AI can answer from. For most businesses the best setup is both: the AI answers routine questions and collects details, and hands the conversation, with its history, to a person when it is unsure or when a lead deserves a real conversation.
AI chatbot vs live chat at a glance
| Live chat (people) | AI chatbot | |
|---|---|---|
| Who answers | A person from your team, in real time | A language model, based on content you approve, with handover to a person |
| Availability | During staffed hours; outside them an offline message or a form | Around the clock, in several languages |
| Quality | Judgement, empathy and flexible answers; depends on the person and the workload | Consistent for questions your content covers; can be wrong or vague on questions it does not |
| Scaling | More chats need more people | More chats mainly mean higher usage fees |
| Example prices (as of November 2026) | Tidio Free plan with 50 billable conversations per month, Starter $24.17 per month billed annually; Intercom from $29 per seat per month billed annually (Essential), unlimited live chat on all plans; Odoo Live Chat included in Odoo’s Standard plan with all apps | Intercom Fin AI Agent $0.99 per outcome; Tidio Lyro AI Agent from $32.50 per month for 50 AI conversations; Odoo lists Agentic AI as part of its Custom plan |
| Setup effort | Install the widget, define opening hours, train the team | Prepare and maintain content, define topics, limits and handover rules, test |
| Main risk | Slow or missing replies when the team is busy | Wrong or invented answers if content and limits are weak |
| Best for | Few, high-value or complex conversations | Many recurring questions and support outside office hours |
As of November 2026. Prices as shown on the vendors’ official pricing pages, excluding VAT; Intercom and Tidio prices in US dollars with annual billing. The differences that matter in practice
Scripted chatbot, AI chatbot or a person
A scripted chatbot follows a fixed path. In Odoo, for example, a chatbot script consists of steps such as a text message, a question with answer buttons, asking for an email address or phone number, forwarding to an operator, or creating a lead in CRM or a ticket in Helpdesk. That is predictable, but visitors can only choose what you anticipated. An AI chatbot understands free text and answers from your content. A person can handle anything, but only when available. The three are not mutually exclusive; they are levels of automation.
Handover to a person
The most important part of any chatbot is how it hands over. Odoo’s documentation describes an AI agent for live chat that escalates when, among other cases, a request needs custom pricing, contracts or implementation work, when the user asks to be contacted, or when the agent cannot respond with high confidence, and then collects contact details to create a lead. Intercom lists handoffs to agents in your inbox, and Tidio lists human handoff for its Lyro AI agent. Whatever tool you use, define these rules before going live and make sure the person who takes over sees the full conversation.
How costs scale
Live chat costs grow with people: seats and, above all, the time of the team members who answer. Intercom charges per seat, from $29 per seat per month on the Essential plan billed annually, and includes unlimited live chat on all plans. Tidio’s Free plan includes 50 billable conversations per month, meaning conversations with a reply from a person; replies from its AI agent do not count as such. AI chatbots scale with usage: Intercom charges $0.99 per Fin outcome, at most once per conversation, and Tidio’s Lyro starts at $32.50 per month for 50 AI conversations. For a few chats a day, live chat is often cheaper; for hundreds of recurring questions, AI usually is.
Quality depends on your content
An AI chatbot is only as good as the content it answers from. If your help articles are outdated, prices are missing or policies contradict each other, the AI will repeat that confusion, and confidently so. Before launching, collect the questions customers ask most often, make sure your content answers them clearly, and test the bot against them. Keep the scope narrow at first: product questions, opening hours, order status, appointment booking. Questions about contracts, complaints or individual pricing belong with a person.
Data protection and integration
Chat conversations contain personal data, so you need to know where they are stored and which AI provider processes them. Check the data processing agreement and hosting region of every tool. The bigger difference in daily work is integration: a chat that creates a lead in your CRM, opens a ticket or checks an order status is worth far more than one that only talks. In Odoo, Live Chat, CRM and Helpdesk share one database, so a chatbot can create a lead or ticket directly. If data must stay under your control, an assistant on your own infrastructure is an option; we describe that approach in private AI on your company data.
Pros and cons
Live chat (people)
Pros
- Real people build trust and handle complex or emotional questions
- Flexible answers, also to questions nobody anticipated
- Quick to set up: widget, opening hours, team
- Direct sales conversations with qualified leads
Cons
- Only available during staffed hours
- Response times suffer when the team is busy
- Costs grow with every person and every hour
- Quality varies with the person and the workload
AI chatbot
Pros
- Answers around the clock and in several languages
- Handles many recurring questions at the same time
- Collects contact details and qualifies requests before handover
- Usage-based pricing that can stay low at moderate volumes
Cons
- Can give wrong or vague answers if the content is weak
- Needs content preparation, testing and ongoing maintenance
- Usage fees grow with volume and need monitoring
- Some visitors prefer a person and leave if they cannot reach one
Who should choose which?
Live chat fits businesses with fewer but more valuable conversations: B2B services, consulting, complex or configurable products. If someone in your team can answer within minutes during business hours, live chat with a simple offline form is often enough. Odoo Live Chat is a sensible choice if you already use Odoo, because conversations land right next to CRM and Helpdesk.
An AI chatbot fits when the same questions come in every day, visitors arrive outside office hours or you serve customers in several languages. Online shops, software products and service businesses with many standard requests benefit most. The conditions are good content and clear handover rules. If you are also considering a custom assistant for other tasks, read ChatGPT vs a custom AI assistant.
The combination works best for most companies: the AI answers routine questions and collects details, and a person takes over sales conversations, complaints and anything the AI is unsure about. Where the chat should also act in your systems, for example check an order or book an appointment, it becomes an integration project; if your data lives in Odoo, our Odoo implementation team can connect it.
FAQ: AI chatbot vs live chat
What is the difference between an AI chatbot and live chat?
With live chat, a person from your team answers in real time. An AI chatbot uses a language model to answer automatically from content you provide and hands over to a person when needed. Scripted chatbots without AI follow fixed questions and buttons.
Can an AI chatbot replace our support team?
For recurring questions it can take over a large share of conversations; for complex, sensitive or high-value requests people remain essential. A good setup defines clearly when the chatbot hands over and gives the person the full conversation history.
What does an AI chatbot cost?
As of November 2026, Intercom charges $0.99 per Fin outcome, at most once per conversation, plus seats from $29 per month billed annually. Tidio’s Lyro AI agent starts at $32.50 per month for 50 AI conversations. Custom chatbots have development costs plus model usage fees.
Does Odoo have a chatbot?
Yes. Odoo Live Chat includes scripted chatbots that ask questions, collect email addresses or phone numbers, forward to an operator and can create CRM leads or Helpdesk tickets. In Odoo 19, an AI agent from the AI app can also be assigned to a live chat channel; Odoo lists Agentic AI as part of its Custom plan.
How do we prevent an AI chatbot from giving wrong answers?
Limit it to content you have checked, define topics it should not answer, set rules for handing over to a person and test it against your most common questions before launch. Review conversations regularly and improve your content where the bot struggled.
