Many manufacturers still sell complex, configurable products through static galleries and PDF price lists. Buyers guess. Sales teams rebuild every quote by hand. The catalogue is accurate on paper — and almost useless online.
For product lines with real combinatorial complexity (modules, finishes, dimensions, constraints), a brochure site is not a sales system. It is a brochure.
When a catalogue stops being enough
Off-the-shelf storefronts assume SKUs are discrete: pick one, add to cart. That works for simple products. It breaks when the buyer must compose something valid from rules — which combinations are allowed, which parts conflict, which options change price or lead time.
In those cases the real work is not “a nicer website.” It is encoding catalogue fidelity into a tool the customer can use before they talk to sales.
What a product configurator actually has to do
A recent Metanow custom-software delivery for a European manufacturer followed that brief: a web configurator so visitors could compose products from the live catalogue — valid combinations only — and hand a clean specification to the sales process.
The delivery bar was practical:
- Catalogue fidelity — real options, real constraints, no invalid builds
- Performance on ordinary browsers — interactive composition without friction
- A clean handoff — from configuration to quote or CRM, without retyping
None of that is glamorous. All of it decides whether the tool reduces sales cycle time or becomes another abandoned demo.
Build vs buy (again)
Buy when a standard configurator or commerce platform already models your constraints. Build when the product logic is the edge — and when forcing it into a generic cart creates more exceptions than it removes.
That is the same rule we apply to custom software generally: build when the software is how you compete; integrate or buy when the workflow is standard.
How we approach this class of work
We scope the smallest configurator that encodes real catalogue rules, ship it in increments so sales can try it early, and wire the handoff into the systems you already run (CRM, ERP, quote tools). We push back when a static redesign would be enough — and we build when the catalogue genuinely cannot be sold as a flat list.
Metanow builds custom software, integrations, and configurators for manufacturers and service businesses across Albania, Germany, and Switzerland. If your buyers still assemble quotes from PDFs and screenshots, the first conversation is whether a configurator is the right next system — or whether a tighter catalogue and CRM path would do more with less.
