There are two very different questions hidden in "how long does SEO take". One is how long the setup work takes: auditing the site, fixing technical issues, writing meta data, connecting Search Console and analytics. The other is how long it takes until Google rewards that work with better rankings.
The first one we can answer precisely from our own records. The second one depends on your market, your competitors and your content, and anyone who gives you a fixed date is guessing.
The short answer
Across the 24 one-time SEO setup projects we have delivered, the median project was completed 6 days after kickoff. The middle half of projects took between 5 and 10 days. The median amount of logged work was 4.7 hours, with most projects between 3.8 and 8.7 hours.
That is much faster than a website build, and it is mostly because SEO setups rarely need feedback loops. 16 of the 24 projects were completed without a single adjustment round; the rest needed one.
What happens in an SEO setup, step by step
Our standard setup follows the same sequence every time.
| Step | What we do | Who needs to act |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Access and brief | Website login, Search Console or Google account access, competitors, target keywords | Client |
| 2. Audit | Crawl with Semrush or SE Ranking: technical errors, indexation, speed, headings, broken links | Our team |
| 3. Keyword research | Around ten researched keywords mapped to pages | Our team, confirmed by client |
| 4. Technical fixes | SEO plugin (Rank Math or Yoast), sitemap, robots.txt, heading structure, indexation settings | Our team |
| 5. On-page work | Meta titles, meta descriptions, image ALT texts, content recommendations per page | Our team |
| 6. Tracking | Google Search Console, Google Analytics 4, often Bing Webmaster Tools | Our team with client access |
| 7. Final audit and report | Before/after comparison and a list of next steps | Our team |
Step 1 is the one that decides the timeline
When our SEO projects were delayed, it was usually before the real work started: waiting for a WordPress login, for access to an existing Search Console property, or for the client to decide which Google account should own the analytics. We now ask for all access in one message at kickoff and set up tracking under the client's own account, so nothing is lost if they change agencies later.
Keyword research: expect the first list to change
Clients usually arrive with a list of keywords they want to rank for. After research, some of those terms turn out to have little search volume or to describe a service the client does not really offer. It is normal to swap a few keywords after the first report. We had one client who, for legal reasons, was not yet allowed to use a professional title on the site – so those terms had to be excluded entirely. Tell us about restrictions like this early.
Technical fixes: the surprises
The technical audit regularly uncovers things nobody knew about. The most dramatic one: a site that was still set to "discourage search engines" in WordPress after launch. Every page carried a noindex tag. No amount of keyword work would have helped until that was switched off.
Other common findings: an address on the website that did not match the Google Business Profile, legacy pages describing services the company no longer offers, and a Google Maps embed loading before cookie consent.
Standard versus premium setup
For local businesses we also offer an extended setup that adds local landing pages, Google Business Profile optimisation, LocalBusiness schema and consistent name, address and phone details across directories. Interestingly, these did not take longer on the calendar: the median premium setup was done in 5 days (from 6 projects) compared with 6 days for standard setups. They did take more work – a median of 7.3 hours versus 3.9 hours.
When will you see results?
This is where honesty matters. The setup is done in about a week. Google then has to recrawl the pages, and the changes show up gradually. A few things to expect:
- Old titles can linger. Google may keep showing your previous title or description until it recrawls the page, and sometimes it rewrites snippets on its own.
- Search Console data needs time. A freshly connected property starts with little data. Meaningful trends take weeks.
- Rankings depend on competition. A local tradesperson in a mid-sized city and a software company competing nationally are not in the same race.
A one-time setup gives your site a clean technical foundation and a clear keyword structure. It does not replace ongoing content work if you are in a competitive market.
How to make your SEO setup faster
- Send website, hosting and Google account access in one go.
- Name two to five competitors you actually lose customers to.
- List any terms you must not use, and any services you no longer offer.
- Make sure your business address and phone number are final.
- Tell us if a redesign is planned – doing SEO on a site that will be replaced next month wastes effort.
FAQ
Can SEO be done in one day?
The technical checklist on a small site can be worked through quickly, but the audit, keyword research, implementation and final audit together took a median of 6 days in our projects. Rushing the research step is where results suffer.
Why does Google still show my old page title?
Google has not recrawled the page yet, or it has chosen to display a different snippet. Requesting indexing in Search Console can speed up the recrawl, but it is not instant.
Do I need ongoing SEO after the setup?
Not always. If your market is local and not very competitive, a solid setup plus a well-maintained Google Business Profile can be enough. In competitive markets, rankings usually require regular new content and link building.
How long does an SEO setup take?
Our 24 SEO setups took a median of 6 calendar days and 4.7 hours of work. 16 of 24 needed no revision round at all.
What is the difference between a standard and a premium SEO setup?
Mostly depth. Our standard setups took a median of 3.9 hours, premium setups 7.3 hours; the extra time goes into more pages, local and structured-data work and deeper checks.
Where the numbers come from: our own project records in Odoo – 233 finished projects, 909 tasks and about 4941 logged hours, mostly from 2025–2026. Durations are calendar days from kickoff and we quote medians, so one unusually long project does not distort the picture.
